Más Rudas is headed for LA where the multimedia Chicana art collective -- composed of Mari Hernandez, Ruth Buentello, Sarah Castillo, Kristin Gamez and Cristina Ordoñez -- will have a one-week residency at Slanguage.

The residency will culminate in "Homegirls," a large-scale installation ala "Operation Canis Familiaris," the collective's show earlier this year at the Guadalupe Gallery.

"We chose the theme of 'Homegirls' because we wanted to explore our relationships with one another and also show what a contemporary Chicana is like," Hernandez said via e-mail. "...If you Google the term, the images that pop up are very stereotypical, but at the same time they seem to capture what one might expect as their homegirl. We hope to get across what your homegirl looks like today, in a new time."

To help fund their trip to the West Coast, the fearsome fivesome auctioned off work and sold T-shirts and posters at the closing reception for "Operation Canis Familiaris."

"We are driving in Ruth's dad's big ol' truck (needless to say our funds will be going to gas)," Hernandez said.

"Homegirls" will open August 7 and run for a month.

The San Pedro Playhouse's season subscribers have spoken -- the March slot upstairs will be filled by "Light in the Piazza."

The Playhouse gave subscribers who purchased their season tickets early a chance to vote on the March musical. They had four choices: "Light in the Piazza," "The King and I," "La Cage Aux Folles" and "Kiss Me Kate." When the votes were tallied, "Light" and "King" were just a vote apart.

Which brings us to a change in the season. Because the voting was so close, Executive Director Di Ann Sneed and Artistic Director Frank Latson decided to pull "Fiddler on the Roof" from the summer musical slot and plug in "The King and I" instead.

"When you're talking about one vote, it's kind of hard to kick it out the door," Sneed said.

There's also been a little shifting in the lineup for the Cellar Theater downstairs. Latson, who is directing the season opener in the space, wasn't able to find an age-appropriate actor for "The Young Man from Atlanta." Rather than trying to shoehorn someone into the role, "Young Man" was replaced with another Horton Foote play, "The Carpetbagger's Children." Latson is still directing; he has cast Magda Porter and Elise Lopez. (The third role hadn't been finalized Wednesday morning.)

That change has prompted a small shift in the schedule. "Carpetbagger's Children" will play Aug. 27-Sept. 26, and "Homegrown Tomatoes" also moves forward a week, to Oct. 22-Nov. 21.
