Fear of Flying

“I hear you.” 

“And when you hear me, what do I promise you?” 

“My dreams?” 

“Your dreams are yours. They have always been yours and will always be yours. That is not the promise I make. It is the promise you want me to make.” 

“I have followed you.” 

“You are mistaken.” 

“What have I done, then?” 

“My promise to you is simple. I am everywhere, and I will always be wherever you go. I am here for you, but following me is an illusion. You follow your dreams, your heart, your whims, and if you take the time, your plans. I am not the cause of any of those things, even if I am an inspiration. You must learn to listen to those things within you, and make decisions based on them.” 

“I thought if I listened to you and went where you directed me that somehow I would be special, and everything would work out.” 

“Everything will work out, and you are special. I have nothing to do with that, though.” 

“Tell me, how am I special?” 

“For one thing, you can talk to the wind.” And with that, the wind let go of him and went on its way. The boy walked back home. As he walked, he listened to the sound of his footsteps and his breath and his heart beating in his chest. It was cold, but he didn’t feel it.
