Fear of Flying

“That’s simple. A good woman is easy to please.”

“Wouldn’t it be safer to just be alone?”

“No,” said the sky. “No man is an island.”

The boy tugged at the man’s sleeve. “Am I special?” he asked.

“Yes, you are. Why do you ask?”

“Because Mom made me think I wasn’t.”

“Mom also said you live in your own little world.”

“Do I?”

“Yes.”

“But how do I know I’m special?”

“Well, for one thing you can talk to me,” said the man, and he gave the boy a hug. A green flash streaked across the black.

“A falling star!”  said the boy.

“Make a wish.”

“I already did.”

“What did you wish for?”

“I can’t tell you. It won’t come true.”

It was late, and they made their way home. That night the man fell asleep easily, and dreamed he was flying.
