Fear of Flying

The Man

Later that evening, he took the boy for a walk. They went to the same place where he had talked to the wind and he showed the boy the constellations.

“So what do you think?” he asked the boy, his hand on his shoulder.

“I can only see the big dipper. It’s the only one that makes sense.”

“I know what you mean. It takes a leap of faith to connect the dots. You know, some people use the stars to guide them. They can navigate their way across the ocean just by knowing the sky.”

“I don’t know if I could do that.”

“Do you want to?”

“I’d like to go sailing. Remember the sailboat I made with Dad?”

“I remember. It was yellow and floated. This weekend is Mom’s birthday.”

“Did you get her something nice?”

“Yes. We’re having lunch on Saturday.”

“Can I go?”

“Of course.”
